PROJECTS

Game of Cones

Site: 26 Ernest Ave, Toronto

Instructor: Vivian WH Lee

This project explores thin shell structures through a series of paper folding exercises that allow a modular unit to achieve different spans and to regulated patterns of structural aggregation that turns the paper structure into actual architectural elements. The aggregation rationalizes the structures into a maker’s mart that attracts people to visit artists and their studios.

An initial module composed of two cones intersecting a groin vault is calibrated to create individual rooms as it tapers down for stability. Since the site is within a residential context, the rooms bud into the street to form a closer relationship between the pedestrians and the artists.
